Lyrics To: One Step Up

Farmer Jim had this large farm in the valley...

Had this ole mule named Sally...

Sally was out by the barn eating hay...

She thought things could be better even that day.

She saw this beautiful green grass across the fence...

Eating that old dried hay didn't make sense...

Sally decided somehow she would go and eat...

Some of that beautiful green grass, even in the heat.

As she was strolling along the winding trail...

She walked across the boards on Farmer Jim's old abandoned well...

The boards broke that covered the old abandoned well...

Darkness she saw, Sally was falling she could tell.

She hit the bottom of the well with a loud thump...

Sally was quite dizzy, raised her body, then fell in a slump...

For hours Sally lay on that cold dark ground...

She was hoping Farmer Jim would come around.

Sally said, "life can't end this way...

She wanted to eat some of that beautiful green grass that day...

Farmer Jim could not find Sally at feeding time...

He was puzzled for it appeared that morning Sally was fine.

Farmer Jim went to all of his neighbors to inquire about Sally...

The neighbors told Farmer Jim they would search for Sally throughout the valley...

Morning appeared and Sally had not been found...

They did not know Sally was deep in the ground.

One of the neighbors came upon this old abandoned well...

All of the search party he would tell...

Farmer Jim said, "Sally must be dead...

We'll fill up the well", then he said.

"This will bury Sally and keep other animals from falling in the well, we'll begin at sunrise"...

At sunrise they began shoveling in the dirt and was Sally in for a surprise...

When the dirt began hitting Sally on her back...

A great fear came over her as she felt this was an awful attack.

Sally thought this can not be happening to me...

I have to get out of this deep dark hole so I can see...

When the dirt hit Sally's back she would shake it off onto the ground...

Then she would take one step up and pack the dirt down.

Sally said, "this is my way out of this deep dark hole"...

Each time the dirt hit Sally's back she would shake it off, take one step up and say, "this story must be told"...

Sally thought, life's most troubled problems can be solved by taking one step up at a time, so you can see the lights...

And I've had my worst nightmare for I have stayed in this deep dark hole for two nights.

The continued, then Sally said, "I must take one step up at a time...

I'll reach the top and everything will be fine...

Sally reached the top and took one step out...

Rejoicing came from the farmers as they began to shout.

Now you can't keep a good mule down...

Even when you're trying to bury the ole mule in the ground.
